What happens when the temps dip below 20°F and it starts getting dark at 4pm? Hibernation. And this year, I am embracing it full force. We’re still getting out of the house once a day, but our pace is much slower and our itinerary less ambitious.
This is a stark contrast to our usual behavior during the warmer months. Any summer weekend you’d catch us outside from brunch until evening cocktails, leaving the house by 9am and not returning until after dark.
But that’s not the case right now, the long days have turned into short bursts. We're sticking to quick, three-hour outings at most and keeping the pace relaxed — why not, right?
Which brings me to our quick 3-hour jaunt this weekend. On Saturday we took the subway to the West Village to visit a recently-opened locale of Keg and Lantern Brewing.
When I was pregnant with Caroline, we spent a lot of time catching up with friends at various breweries around town (non-alcoholic for me, of course), and found ourselves pleasantly surprised by how family friendly they are. Duly noted.
Now that Little C is here (earthside, as we like to joke), we find ourselves gravitating towards breweries for the relaxed vibes and ample space (perfect for parking the stroller!).
The challenge? Brooklyn has the lion’s share of breweries, Manhattan only has four options (ironically, all outposts of Brooklyn breweries). Torch and Crown is the only Manhattan-based brewery we have, and even that is seasonal (closes down for the winter).
So we had every intention of trekking to Brooklyn but our morning didn’t go to plan. Oddly enough, after feeding the baby I unexpectedly went down for a two-hour nap (like what! that was not on my bingo card).
By the time I woke up it was already noon and we didn’t want to schlep all the way to Brooklyn, so we debated some nearby options and realized Keg and Lantern recently opened in the West Village.
We visited the Red Hook location many times, so we knew the beers would be great. Alas, we bundled the baby up and made our way over. We spent two hours lounging and catching each other up on our weeks while the baby slept, it was really nice.
On Sunday we had lofty plans to visit the Met, but you know how it goes sometimes - we barely made it out of the house at all!
Personal Updates
We are trying to sleep train the baby and wow, Dante’s Inferno needs an update. Up until this point, Caroline has been rocked to sleep. Now we’re trying to figure out how to get her to put herself down in the crib. So far, we’ve managed to get 20-minute catnaps from the crib, a far cry from the two-hour naps she takes when held.
Anyway, we’ve been trying the crib for about a week and it’s been tough. She wakes up instantly, offended by our cruel parenting methods of putting her down to sleep on her own. At this point we’re working on making her first nap of the day a crib nap and then working our way up from there - fingers crossed! Send any advice you have, I’m all ears, seriously!
Cheers!
Antonina
Good luck with the sleep. Lots of perseverance, they do get there in the end. Try not to pick up immediately when she cries but comfort (until you can’t) by rocking her gently while she’s laying in the crib, stroking etc.
Might not work but we found it useful! All babies are different but anything is worth a try!
