The most wonderful thing happened last week, it finally snowed in NYC! I shared some photos on my instagram (feel free to follow along if you like photos of NYC, by the way!) a few days ago, but wanted to document the momentous occasion here as well!
The forecast predicted up to 3 inches of snow last Tuesday, so my husband and I set an alarm for 6:30 am (mercy!) to get a head start on the day. We made plans to spend the morning taking photos of the city in the snow before everything turned to slush.
I hail from the Pacific Northwest and snow was not very common growing up. Ironically enough, I think it has snowed the last 3 years in my hometown (if I’m not mistaken). But I don’t think it really matters if you grew up in a snowy climate or not, the first snowfall of the year always feels like magic.
We started the morning with a walk through our neighborhood (the Upper West Side) before popping on the subway toward Bryant Park. Hardly a soul in sight, the park was so peaceful in the early morning hours. From Bryant Park, we took the bus to the West Village (keen to see the Washington Square arch covered in snow!).
It wasn’t as snowy at Washington Square Park, but still very beautiful (it was peaceful here too). While wrapping up our time in the park, someone walked by with a bag of Popup Bagels and a light bulb went off — the place is usually packed but maybe we’d get lucky on a snow day? We were right, since there wasn’t a line, we ordered some bagels before popping on the subway to head home.
Must Try: Popup Bagels
Popup Bagels has an interesting concept, the minimum order of bagels is 3. You get to choose the variety of bagels you’d like + a schmear, and they bake them as soon as you place your order. The end result? A delicious pipping hot bagel, fresh from the oven. This is one of the best bagels in NYC, no doubt and I’m already plotting my return. Can’t recommend them enough!
Saturday at home
Saturday was an easy-going day for us, not much to report. We hosted a group of friends at our place (my husband made Low Country Boil) and played card games into the late evening hours — tons of laughter, tons of fun. My favorite thing about living in NYC is the social nature of the city — seems like people are more open to making friends here than any other place I’ve lived. Here’s some photos from Saturday!
Sunday at the Met & Bemelmans Bar
With the snowy days behind us by the weekend, we decided to return to business as usual. Longtime readers know that we start most Sundays with a trip to the Met (the annual membership is a phenomenal deal!). This Sunday, we revisited some of our favorite paintings (here’s a roundup of my 20 favorite things to see at the Met).
After the musuem, we tucked into Bemelmans Bar (at the Carlyle Hotel) for some strong libations before trekking across the park to get home. The hand-painted murals on the walls depict Central Park in all 4 seasons, and were done by Ludwig Bemelmans (beloved author of the Madeline books).
That’s a wrap! See you next Monday?

Great to see current shots of Manhattan in the snow.
I lived in Manhattan from 1966 to 2016 (50 years) before moving west.
When you're young or "youngish" Manhattan is a great place to live.
And whenever I watch a moving with Manhattan as a backdrop I thank my lucky stars that in 1958 at 12 (looking like 17) I went into Manhattan all by myself and declared "I'm living here!" Moved in at 20 and stayed till I was 70 -- it easily exceeded my expectations!
