Saturday: Little Island & Pier 57
The best thing about living in NYC is having access a never-ending list of activities. We didn’t have any weekend plans but the forecast promised sunshine, so we chatted over coffee and decided we’d take a trip to Pier 57 to lounge around for a bit.
Pier 57 neighbors Little Island, and since Will had never been (I know!) we made that our first stop. It was very pretty because everything was in bloom views of Lower Manhattan are top-notch.
We found a few small grassy patches that would be perfect for summer picnics, so we’ll be back for sure. After Little Island, we walked over the Pier 57 and parked ourselves at an outdoor table where we had brews and tacos. We lingered for 3+ hours before packing it in and heading home.
We got home at a strange time (around 4pm) and rather than settling in for the night (it was still so light outside!) we made some cocktails and had some snacks at home before taking a walk to Riverside Park to see the blushing trees.
P.S. If you’re curious, I recently wrote a roundup of my favorite spots to see cherry blossoms in NYC.
It was beautiful, but so windy!! We clocked in 3 miles and then came home to make dinner. Will tried a new pasta recipe from our most-used cookbook and wow, I’m still dreaming about it!
Sunday Morning at Governors Island
There’s a free ferry that operates to/from Governors Island Saturday & Sunday before 11am, so we took advantage of it (because NYC is so damn expensive) on Sunday morning. Unfortunately for us, we were riding the sunny high from Saturday and didn’t properly prepare for the gusty weather.
Did I commandeer my husband’s jacket on the ferry ride over? What else is a wife for?
Anyways, it was pretty obvious that we timed our visit poorly. The island was still waking up from the moody bouts of winter and the cooler temps kept people at bay. It wasn’t as lively as we remembered, but we popped on some bikes for a quick loop around the island before making an impromptu decision to catch the Brooklyn-bound ferry instead of returning to Manhattan.
You know I can’t help myself — whenever I’m withing spitting distance of a Red Hook ferry, I hop aboard. It’s the tempting burger at Red Hook Tavern that has my heart, but the epic views of the Statue of Liberty from Strong Rope Brewery don’t hurt either.
Coming up: We’ll be catching a show at the Beacon this weekend (very excited for it), and plan to spend next Sunday in Red Hook (again) with some friends. Per usual, I’ll keep you posted!
Cheers,
Antonina
